Acupuncture plus much more
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the ancient art of using very thin needles to stimulate set points on the body, thereby opening up blockages and restoring the body’s pathways of Qi (vital energy). Kelly is trained in the Japanese style of acupuncture, a gentle and refined practice using very small gauges of needles inserted to a very shallow depth.
Moxibustion
Another beautiful, ancient medicine, moxibustion stimulates acupuncture points with heat. Tiny hairs are gathered from the leaves of the mugwort plant to create moxa, which is burned in various forms on acupuncture points to warm and invigorate the Qi. This process is painless and pleasantly warm.
Cupping
Using cups with suction, cupping will gently lift the skin away from the fascia, increasing blood flow and Qi circulation, while releasing tight muscles and tissue. It can help with chronic pain or acute injuries and can calm the nervous system and relax the body. Cupping will often leave round, reddish marks where the cups have been. This is a very common and harmless side effect to the treatment.
Gua Sha
Gua sha is a muscle scraping technique using a tool, typically made from jade or other stones. It has similar effects to cupping but is more vigorous and goes deeper into the tissue. Gua sha is an excellent way to release stuck fascia, relieving pain and tension.
Body Work
At Gather, we have been extensively trained in body work methods including fascial release, Sotai, and shiatsu. The body work we use most at Gather is fascial release. The fascia is a thin and flexible connective tissue that covers the entire body, from head to toe, and provides structure and support to the body’s tissues. Fascia is meant to stretch and move with the body. When the fascia becomes tight and tense, it can limit your body’s mobility and, eventually, cause pain. Myofascial release is a slow and gentle manipulation of the fascia to release the restricted, stiffened tissue, and promote better mobility and circulation. It is an excellent addition to your acupuncture treatment.
Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is a powerful tool on its own or used in conjunction with acupuncture. Taking home an herbal formula allows you the benefit of ongoing treatment between acupuncture sessions. These herbal formulas can be highly customized to your specific condition, but this requires a bit more time for diagnosis. You can add this option as an Acu-Plus modality or you can book an herbal consult on its own.
